Since\u00a0taking\u00a0office in 2016,\u00a0President\u00a0Shavkat Mirziyoyev\u00a0has\u00a0has\u00a0launched\u00a0many reforms\u00a0throughout\u00a0the country. Under the slogan\u00a0\u00ab\u00a0New Uzbekistan\u00a0\u00bb, a\u00a0broad series of initiatives was offered\u00a0last year\u00a0to the Uzbek population, who then were requested to\u00a0pronounce on them\u00a0through a referendum.<\/p>\n
This was the\u00a0first of three\u00a0nation-wide votes,\u00a0starting\u00a0in 2023\u00a0and extending into this year.\u00a0The second was\u00a0the Presidential election\u00a0a couple of months later,\u00a0where the\u00a0people reconfirmed their strong support for the\u00a0President.<\/p>\n
In line with the 2023 reforms,\u00a0the\u00a0third was\u00a0carried out last Sunday, 27 October. This time the people were voting to elect\u00a0the legislative chamber of the\u00a0Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan,\u00a0combined with\u00a0elections to\u00a0the local Kengashes councils.<\/p>\n
The Uzbek Election Committee, under its chairman Mr NiZAMKHODJAEV had done an\u00a0exemplary\u00a0job, ensuring transparency and fairness of the electoral process in full compliance with international standards. For the\u00a0first\u00a0time in the history of Uzbekistan, elections to the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majilis were held on the basis of a mixed majoritarian-proportional electoral system. 150\u00a0representatives were elected to\u00a0the Legislative Chamber as well\u00a0those elected to the\u00a0regional Kengashes\u00a0councils.<\/p>\n
Turn-out was high — above\u00a070 percent, which\u00a0surpassed\u00a0by far\u00a0the 33% threshold needed for the election to be valid. All candidates came from\u00a0one of\u00a0the country’s five registered political parties, and,\u00a0owing\u00a0to the 2023? reforms, there\u00a0was a further increase in the number of\u00a0seats for women. The Election Committee in the country, being in the forefront of\u00a0innovation\u00a0in Central Asia, also tested a new electronic\u00a0voting\u00a0system in 10 different election polling\u00a0stations, with satisfactory results.<\/p>\n
The outcome\u00a0of the election showed 64\u00a0MPs\u00a0for the Movement of Entrepreneurs and Businessmen \u2013\u00a0Uzbekistan Liberal Democratic Party;\u00a029 for\u00a0the\u00a0Democratic Party of Uzbekistan;\u00a020 for\u00a0the\u00a0People’s Democratic Party of Uzbekistan;\u00a021 for\u00a0the\u00a0Social Democratic Party;\u00a0and 16 for\u00a0the\u00a0Uzbekistan Ecology\u00a0Party.<\/p>\n
As\u00a0just mentioned above,\u00a0the Uzbekistan Liberal Democratic Party\u00a0garnered the biggest share of the votes, It\u00a0is a self-described\u00a0centre-right\u00a0party of the\u00a0middle class\u00a0and\u00a0private property\u00a0owners, as well as\u00a0of\u00a0businesspeople, farmers, and the service sector. It seeks to promote\u00a0economic liberalism\u00a0and\u00a0economic liberalization, having\u00a0already\u00a0liberalized the\u00a0foreign currency\u00a0market.<\/p>\n
Uzbekistan will thus continue on its development\u00a0path, showing\u00a0that the democratic reforms undertaken in the country continue\u00a0apace.<\/p>\n
